Sun Tubes for Bathrooms: Real Installations Across New Zealand

Bathrooms are often the darkest rooms in the home. With no windows, limited ventilation, constant artificial lighting, and high moisture levels, they can easily feel enclosed and uninviting. A Suntrenz sun tube brings natural daylight into windowless bathrooms, transforming the space instantly without sacrificing privacy.

From compact urban homes in Auckland to modern builds in Canterbury and lifestyle properties in the Bay of Plenty, we’ve installed sun tubes in bathrooms of all shapes and sizes. Here are some of our favourite bathroom sun tube installations from across New Zealand.

We especially enjoy lighting up the “throne” room — often tucked away in one of the darkest corners of the home. In the examples below, two sun tubes were installed above toilets in small, enclosed, windowless rooms. The difference is dramatic. What was once a dim, claustrophobic space becomes bright, fresh, and far more comfortable.

Modern bathrooms often favour stark white walls and white or grey tiling. By installing a sun tube skylight, soft natural light reduces the harshness of bright white surfaces, transforming the space from feeling institutional to something warmer, cleaner, and more calming.

One customer shared:

“After Suntrenz installed a sun tube skylight in our bathroom, which made an enormous difference, we had another three installed in other rooms of our house that we found too dark. In all cases, we are very happy with the results.

The Suntrenz team is highly professional, providing good advice and excellent workmanship. We are very happy to recommend them.”

Sun tubes are even better when multiplied. In this example two sun tubes bring much needed light into a large windowless bathroom.

Sun Tubes & Bathroom Ventilation

Bathroom tube skylights are commonly used to introduce natural light into bathrooms, toilets and other moisture prone areas. They do not always need to be vented, and it is quite common to install a standard non vented tube skylight alongside a separate mechanical extraction fan.

For projects where a more streamlined solution is preferred, we also offer a vented Suntube system that integrates both natural daylight and mechanical extraction into one unit. This removes the need for a separate ceiling fan and reduces additional roof penetrations while maintaining a clean ceiling aesthetic.

Suntrenz has two mechanical extraction options available:

  1. A budget friendly inline extraction system suitable for standard residential applications.
  2. A superior automatic extraction system featuring an EC motor with continuous trickle ventilation and automatic humidity control. This system activates when moisture levels rise and continues running until humidity returns to a satisfactory level before switching off.

The automatic humidity controlled option is particularly popular with builders and developers, especially for tenanted properties, as it removes reliance on the end user to manually operate the fan. The system runs when required and switches off once conditions are balanced.

Both vented and non vented options are commonly specified depending on project requirements, budget and overall design preference.
