Case Study
Location: Belfast Christchurch New Zealand
We recently completed a challenging suntube installation for The Darling Family at their new home in Belfast Christchurch. Their hallway was dark and lacked natural light but a major structural truss ran directly through the center which made a standard skylight installation impossible.
Through careful planning and precise placement of the roof flashing we designed a custom solution that brought natural daylight evenly through the hallway. The result was a bright open space that completely changed the feel of the home.
The transformation has been so successful that nearby neighbors with the same home design are now requesting the same installation.
Installation Challenges
- A large truss blocked the direct path where the skylight tube needed to run
- The homeowners wanted perfectly even ceiling diffusers rather than one off center
- Being a new build it was important the work looked clean and integrated with the rest of the house
- The ceiling cavity had very limited space which meant exact measurements and planning were essential
Designing this skylight solution
The position of the roof flashing was critical, and Suntrenz carefully planned it to create a direct pathway for the sun tubing and capture maximum daylight. The reflective tubing was threaded through the truss web itself, avoiding major structural changes while maintaining a clear and efficient route for the light. This approach also kept the skylight installation costs affordable for the homeowner.
Several 45-degree adapters were used to angle the sun tubing perfectly around obstacles without reducing performance. The two square ceiling diffusers were installed and positioned evenly on each side of the truss to create a balanced natural light effect while ensuring the roof design looked symmetrical.
Each step was carefully planned from the first measurement to the final connection to ensure everything came together perfectly.
The complexity of this job and the result we achieved inspired our team to call it the Darling Tube in honor of The Darling Family and the challenge it presented.
The hallway is now completely transformed and filled with beautiful natural light throughout the day.
